Die In-vitro-Fertilisation (IVF) bietet eine erfolgreiche Behandlung bei Infertilität, z. B. bei tubaren oder bei Störungen der männlichen Fertilität. Der Prozess der Befruchtung ist beim natürlichen Ablauf und bei der IVF praktisch identisch, ebenso die Schwangerschaftsrate. Die Abortrate und das Risiko von Frühgeburten und Fehlbildungen sind hingegen nach IVF erhöht. Dabei ist allerdings unklar, ob dies auf die Verfahren zurückgeht, denn die Subfertilität ist auch ein Risikofaktor. Trotz der Trennung von Liebesakt und Zeugung dient IVF letzthin dem Gelingen der Ehe. Wichtig ist stets die gründliche Aufklärung des Paares. Einem Missbrauch beugen die engen Grenzen des deutschen Embryonenschutzgesetzes vor. Manipulationen an der befruchteten Eizelle sollte es nicht geben, da die Verschmelzung von Ei- und Samenzelle als Beginn menschlichen Lebens gilt.
