Despite the important roles of glycans and glycoconjugates in many biological processes, the regulatory mechanism underlying the synthesis of these molecular structures in the Golgi apparatus is not understood. Thus, investigation of the synthetic process is quite important. However, ordinary methods cannot allow us to visualize such a process. Therefore, an alternative method has to be developed. A micro total analysis system (μTAS) that enables analysis of sequential glycosyl-transfer reactions was developed. This microchip-based analysis platform, by mimicking Golgi function, may become a valuable tool not only in the synthesis of compounds but also in situations in which direct observation is quite difficult.
