The low incidence of end-stage renal disease in childhood, resulting in small patient cohorts even in specialized treatment centers, compromises both quality assurance and clinical research in pediatric dialysis. The International Pediatric Peritoneal Dialysis Network (IPPN) aims to overcome these limitations by continuous international collaboration. The IPPN has established a Web portal providing services to 114 pediatric dialysis units in 43 countries. Clinical practice guidelines, pediatric reference curves, calculators for anthropometric indices, clearances and peritoneal transport characteristics, as well as a collection of educational presentations are available online. Also the IPPN entertains an online patient registry now following nearly 1200 children in 71 centers with detailed epidemiological, clinical, biochemical, and pharmacological data. This continuously growing database allows to address important clinical research issues in pediatric peritoneal dialysis, monitor important clinical performance measures, and perform automated benchmarking by comparing center-specific means with the total patient cohort. Hence the IPPN project contributes to the optimization of treatment quality in pediatric peritoneal dialysis around the globe.
