The extent of electrosurgical injuries during endoscopic procedures must be properly understood by the surgeon and the operating team. Ignorance of damage that can be caused as a result of improper use of electrosurgical devices may lead to serious injuries not only to the patient, but also members of the surgical team. This chapter explains the role of electrosurgery in fluids and those of monopolar surgery in particular. Generator settings, various wave forms and the effects of different modes of monopolar surgery have been also explained. Hazards that may arise from improper insulation as well as the improper type of port material selected for the procedure have been clearly detailed. Guidelines for the proper use of monopolar electrosurgery devices are listed.
