Kavernen werden in Steinsalzvorkommen zur Salzgewinnung sowie zur Speicherung von flüssigen und gasförmigen Medien erstellt. Die Überwachung dieser soltechnisch hergestellten Hohlräume ist im Hinblick auf eine sichere und wirtschaftliche Betriebsweise von großer Bedeutung. Echometrische Kavernenvermessungen dienen dabei der Form- und Volumenbestimmung von Kavernen und stellen die Basis für die weitere Solsimulation dar. Markscheiderische Messungen sind darüber hinaus zur Überwachung der Tagesoberfläche und zur Feststellung von Bodenbewegungen erforderlich. Vor der Inbetriebnahme von Speicherkavernen ist die Dichtheit durch geeignete Messverfahren nachzuweisen.
Zur echometrischen Erfassung der Kavernenform und -geometrie mittels Ultraschall müssen eine Vielzahl von Parametern erfasst und verschiedene geophysikalische Messverfahren angewendet werden. Dazu kommen speziell für diesen Zweck entwickelte Messsonden zum Einsatz.
Die Vermessungen liefern in der Aussolphase Informationen über die Formentwicklung sowie den Solfortschritt, und in der Speicherphase lassen sich Formveränderungen und die Volumenkonvergenz bestimmen. Zusammen mit den Ergebnissen der Höhenbeobachtungen an der Tagesoberfläche bilden diese Informationen die Datengrundlage für die gebirgsmechanische Überwachung von Kavernenfeldern und die Dokumentation im Bergmännischen Risswerk.
