Das soziale Klima in Deutschland verändert sich. Über viele Jahre war aus der öffentlichen Debatte, aber auch aus der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion das Wort Unterschicht verschwunden. Noch in den 1980er und 1990er Jahren war die soziologische Zeitdiagnose von Ulrich Beck allgemein akzeptiert, dass die gesellschaftliche Entwicklung der Modernisierung ab den 1960er Jahren zu einer Auflösung traditioneller Sozial- und Herkunftsmilieus geführt habe, und dass die zunehmende Individualisierung tendenziell in eine Gesellschaft „Jenseits von Klasse und Stand“ (Beck 1983) gemündet sei. Aber in den letzten Jahren scheint ein neues Bewusstsein einer „gespaltenen Gesellschaft“ (Lessenich/Nullmeier 2006) zu entstehen.
