We summarize the constraints on three flavor neutrino mixing coming from data. We first map out the allowed region in the three neutrino parameter space using solar and atmospheric neutrino data. We then incorporate the results of reactor and long baseline experiments in our analysis and show that the parameter space is drastically reduced. We conclude by pointing out that the results of Borexino...
I discuss basic theory of effect of the properties of the cosmological relict neutrinos on the observations of the cosmic microwave background anisotropy.
After a brief introduction to neutrino mass via the see-saw model I discuss neutrino mixing and oscillation, first in vacuum and then its matter enhancement. Then the solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillation data are briefly reviewed. Finally I discuss the problem of reconciling hierarchical neutrino masses with at least one large mixing, as implied by these data. A minimal see-saw model for reconciling...
A brief introduction to the phenomena of vacuum neutrino oscillations and resonant flavour conversion is presented with a heavy pedagogic leaning. Variants of these ideas, e.g., neutrino helicity flip in a magnetic field, violation of the equivalence principle, etc. are outlined. A few vexing issues pertaining to the quantum mechanics of neutrino oscillations are discussed. Expectations from some...
I review explanations for the three neutrino anomalies (solar, atmospheric and LSND) which go beyond the ‘conventional’ neutrino oscillations induced by mass-mixing. Several of these require non-zero neutrino masses as well.
With the announcement of new evidence for muon neutrino disappearance observed by the super-Kamiokande experiment, the more than a decade old atmospheric neutrino anomaly moved from a possible indication for neutrino oscillations to an apparently inescapable fact. The evidence is reviewed, and new indications are presented that the oscillations are probably between muon and tau neutrinos. Implications...
We have identified some important and worthwhile physics opportunities with a possible neutrino detector located in India. Particular emphasis is placed on the geographical advantage with a stress on the complimentary aspects with respect to other neutrino detectors already in operation.
This report summarises the work done in the ‘Beyond the Standard Model’ working group of the Sixth Workshop on High Energy Physics Phenomenology (WHEPP-6) held at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, Jan 3–15, 2000. The participants in this working group were: R Adhikari, B Ananthanarayan, K P S Balaji, Gour Bhattacharya, Gautam Bhattacharyya, Chao-Hsi Chang (Zhang). D Choudhury, Amitava...
We derive relativistic fluid set of equations for neutrinos and electrons from relativistic Vlasov equations with Fermi weak interaction force. Using these fluid equations, we obtain a dispersion relation describing neutrino beam plasma instability, which is little different from normal dispersion relation of streaming instability. It contains new, nonelectromagnetic, neutrino-plasma (or electroweak)...
We examine the effects of mixing induced non-diagonal light-heavy neutrino weak neutral currents on the amplitude for the process $$v_a \overline v _a \to ZZ$$ (with a=e, μ or τ). By imposing constraint that the amplitude should not exceed the perturbative unitarity limit at high energy $$\left( {\sqrt s = \Lambda } \right)$$ , we obtain bounds on light-heavy neutrino mixing parameter sin...
What is new in the field of neutrino detection? In addition to new projects probing both the low and high ends of the neutrino energy scale, an inexpensive, effective technique is being developed to allow tagging of antineutrinos in water Cherenkov (WC) detectors via the addition to water of a solute with a large neutron cross-section and energetic γ daughters. Gadolinium is an excellent candidate...
Recent results from solar, reactor, atmospheric and long baseline (K2K) experiments are discussed. With the improved data statistics and analyses, our knowledge on the neutrino masses and mixing angles are steadily improving. T2K is the next generation neutrino oscillation experiment between J-PARC in Tokai and Super-Kamiokande. This experiment will start in 2009. This experiment is expected to improve...
Establishing CP-violation in the lepton sector is one of the most challenging future tasks in neutrino physics. The lepton mixing matrix contains one Dirac phase and, if neutrinos are Majorana particles, two additional CP-violating phases. I will review the main theoretical aspects of CP-violation in the lepton sector. Then, I will present the strategies for determining the Dirac and the Majorana...
Reactor-based antineutrino experiments hold the promise of providing an unambiguous determination of the neutrino mixing angle θ13. At present, Daya Bay, Double Chooz and RENO are such experiments being set up for this purpose. In this paper, the status and prospects of these three initiatives are presented.
The iron calorimeter (ICAL) detector is the proposed underground neutrino-physics experiment in the INO cavern. Its main goal is the determination of sign of 2–3 mass-squared difference, Δ m 32 2 ( = m 3 2 − m 2 2 ) $({=} {m^{2}_{3}} - {m^{2}_{2}})$ in the presence of matter effects, apart from the precise measurement of other neutrino...
