The fungus Macrophomina phaseolina distributed especially in warmer region of Europe is reported for the first time from the Slovakia as a pathogen of sunflower. Morphology of its populations is characterized.
The morphology of poorly known freshwater amoebae, Saccamoeba wellneri Siemensma, 1987 and Saccamoeba limna Bovee, 1972, were investigated using living observations at light microscopic level. S. wellneri was collected from Karloveské rameno branch of the Danube River and Štrkovecké jazero lake in Bratislava, Slovakia. Its locomotive form is typical with crescent-shaped and bipyramidal crystals and...
The signal crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus (Dana, 1852), was recorded in the Slovak-Austrian stretch of the Morava (March) River in the Záhorie region in August 2006. This is the first confirmed record of a non-indigenous crayfish species of American origin in Slovakia. Most likely, signal crayfish were intentionally released to the river by Austrian fishermen, or invaded from adjacent water bodies...
We applied the Cocktail method to a large data set of 4 117 relevés of all Slovak vegetation types with the aim to create formalised definitions of all Slovakian mire plant associations. We defined 21 groups of species with the statistical tendency of joint occurrences in vegetation. These groups differed substantially in their position along the pH/calcium gradient. We further defined 24 plant associations...
The 1997 check list of Dolichopodidae of the Czech Republic and Slovakia has recently been reviewed and updated. The new species list includes 346 species with 22 species added as new to the fauna of the Czech Republic. While the check list itself is published elsewhere, largely unpublished new records of Hercostomus argentifrons, H. nigrilamellatus, Medetera adjaniae, M. melancholica and M. setiventris...
The gut contents of adult Xanthoperla apicalis and Siphonoperla torrentium were analysed. X. apicalis females eat mainly pollen, while males feed principally on detritus and pollen. Adults of S. torrentium, regardless of sex, eat mainly pollen. The presence of animal remains (claws and leg and antennae segments of Arthropoda) in the gut of several individuals of both species was observed and discussed.
Two species of Spilogona, S. angustigena sp. n. and S. tatrica sp. n., are described from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, respectively. Both species are characterised by a gynaecomorphic shape of the male head, i.e., by a broad frons and the presence of a pair of orbital setae. Three species with this type of head are already known in the Palaearctic region: S. karelica (Tiensuu, 1935) from Russian...
In the period 1993–2006, during investigation of reproduction biology of the bearded tit, 106 deserted nests of the species were collected in Slovakia, Austria and Italy and their arthropod fauna was analyzed. Occasionally introduced individuals of the pseudoscorpion Lamprochernes nodosus, a frequent species in Central Europe, were recorded in the nests. Altogether 984 individuals and 33 species of...
The paper includes data on rare occurring pseudofilamentous freshwater red alga, Chroodactylon ornatum (C. Agardh) Basson, in Poland and Slovakia, Central Europe. The species is classified as widespread in the whole world in littoral of stagnant waters or in rivers but rarely noted. Original microphotographs and drawings of Ch. ornatum are presented.
The morphology and morphometry of five soil haptorid ciliates (Apospathidium terricola, Diplites telmatobius, Armatoenchelys geleii, Paraenchelys terricola, and Spathidium aciculare), collected from a variety of terrestrial habitats in Slovakia (Central Europe), were investigated using live observation and protargol impregnation. Emphasis was given on the ciliary pattern, the fine structure of dorsal...
