An analytical solution to the problem of stability of orthotropic and structurally orthotropic cylindrical shells under torsion has been obtained using a small-parameter expansion method. The well-known classical solution is the first approximation for the above-mentioned solution. A detailed numerical analysis has been carried out for isotropic and orthotropic shells. It is demonstrated that for...
We present the results of experimental studies of stability of thin-walled orthotropic cylindrical shells in torsion. The classical solution and the refined theoretical solution as derived in Part 1 are compared with experimental data. Some general conclusions have been made, which define more precisely the current notions of shell buckling under torsion.
