A model is discussed for flow of dense granular matter—a da Vinci fluid. The local properties of the fluid are generically different from ordinary fluids in that energy is dissipated by solid friction. We discuss the equation of flow of such a fluid and show that it gives rise to formation and growth of plug regions—a phenomenon observed frequently in flow of granular matter.
