We should not believe - as some scholars do - that Nicander showed such lack of talent as to sign his Alexipharmaca with a defective acrostic. This assumption becomes unnecessary if we accept the emendations to Alex. 266 and 269 proposed by William C. Helmbold and Jean-Marie Jacques. A discussion of this problem is followed by a Polish translation of the passage containing the acrostic.
The character of Alexander the Great features prominently in ancient Jewish tradition. Of special importance is the passage in Flavius Josephus' 'Antiquitates Iudaicae' (XI 8). The Alexander episode in Josephus is placed within the context of the Jewish-Samaritan conflict as well as within the history of Alexander's conquest of the East: the main aim of this narrative seems to be, as is often the...
Five chapters of Boccaccio's Latin work 'On Famous Women' are printed here in Wlodzimierz Olszaniec's translation in addition to those that appeared in the previous issue of 'Meander'.
A report on the solemn session in honour of Professor Ludwika Rychlewska's ninetieth birthday which convened in Wroclaw in April, 2007. Professor Rychlewska's studies are devoted to many Greek and Latin authors, including those of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance; but it was her works on archaic Roman poetry and her edition of fragments of Turpilius' comedies that brought her international acclaim.
The ancient rhetoricians regard the beginning and the end of a speech as the places particularly suited to influence the hearers' beliefs and emotions. Their advice on this matter is here compared with what modern psychologists say about ways of manipulating the listener.
The archeological exhibition 'Troy - Heinrich Schliemann's Dream', now on tour in Poland gives an occasion to reflect on the relevance of findings at the site of Troy to our understanding of the 'Iliad' and to try to separate certain knowledge from hypotheses.
The article discusses Apuleius' amatory poems as quoted by Apuleius himself in his 'Apology' and by Gellius in the 'Attic Nights', as well as his verses preserved in a medieval manuscript according to which they are a translation of a monologue by Menander.
The same passage of Ovid's manual for lovers is given here in three Polish translations: by Mariusz Zagorski (who supplied his translation with notes), Wojciech Wrotkowski and Ewa Skwara.
The first six chapters of Boethius' first commentary on Porphyry's 'Isagoge' are printed here in Polish translation. The introductory note discusses the system - applied here and popular in Boethius' time - of presenting the nature of the work discussed in the commentary in points, in accordance with a commonly used questionnaire. This system is called by Boethius himself 'didascalica'.
The oracle procedure employed in the sacral complex of Zeus Ammon in Siwa oasis apparently did not differ from that of the standard Egyptian barque procession. This procession, taking place during the god's symbolic journey from Aghurmi to the Umm Ubayda temple, during which questions were asked and answers received, was open to all pilgrims. Archaeological finds, as well as literary tradition concerning...
Nonnus' great epic poem contains many epigrams that are presented as written on somebody's tomb or invented as an epitaph by a dying man, his killer, or another mythical personage. The epitaphs stand out of the poem and usually have most of the elements typical of their genre.
The prologue of Euripides' Hecuba is delivered by the ghost of Polydorus, one of the sons of Hecuba and Priam. Polydorus tells the spectators about his own fate and mentions the earlier apparition of the spirit of Achilles, who demanded that the Greeks sacrifice the captive Polyxena to him. The present article centres on the questions of why Euripides introduced the ghost of Polydorus on stage and...
The article contains an analysis of the preserved fragments of Hecataeus of Abdera's work 'On the Hyperboreans' and a Polish translation of the most important ones. It seems that Hecataeus did not intend to depict an ideal of the pious and virtuous life in order to edify the reader. 'On the Hyperboreans' was not a utopia in the strict sense of the term. It was meant to be an entertaining novel describing...
The article describes the history of the collection of antiquities developed in the so-called archaeological cabinet in one of the high schools in Nowy Sacz. The cabinet was organized by the director of that high school, Stanislaw Rzepinski, an archaeologist and classical scholar.

There is an interesting yet forgotten work of Egyptianizing architecture situated on the premises of a vast park-palace complex in Konskie (a city in central Poland, between Kielce and Opoczno). It is an orangery/hothouse (54,75 x 7,25 m) that was built in the years 1825-1830 on commission for Stanislaw and Anna Malachowski, the owners of the property at that time. The creator of the building was...
