Rationale. In the rehabilitation process of children with cerebral palsy (CP), studies based on methods enabling objective assessment of complex motor phenomena are warranted.Aim. The aim of this article was to present the value of gait analysis during the process of rehabilitation of independently walking children with CP in relation both to individual rehabilitation programming and to monitoring of the obtained results.Methods. In the subsequent sections of the article, the following topics were presented: gait and possibilities of its evaluation, approach to gait assessment, gait of children with CP and categories of gait pattern disturbances in these children, gait of CP children in relation to postural-locomotor patterns, use of gait analysis results for planning the rehabilitation and for the assessment of its effectiveness. Data from the literature and our first-hand experience were used in the evaluation.Discussion and conclusions. It was concluded that presenting an unequivocal and universal “recipe” of how to directly transfer gait assessment results onto the therapeutic management programme for all CP children, is not only difficult, but also purposeless. This results not only from the variability of the clinical picture typical for these cases, but also from individual compensation capabilities of each child, as well as from the quality of previously produced and consolidated movement patterns. Selecting the therapy (e.g. BTXA, inhibiting plasters, surgery or orthopaedic devices, as well as particular inhibiting or facilitating exercises), “gain-loss” balance should always be evaluated. The progress of rehabilitation of individual children with CP is difficult to predict; therefore, control studies can only verify the accuracy of formerly made decisions. Conclusions pertaining to the application and efficacy of various therapeutic options important for the clinical practice were presented in this work.
