Celem artykułu jest próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy coraz powszechniej używany w pracach naukowych i w tekstach publicystycznych termin „wspólnota wirtualna” jest właściwym określeniem dla zbiorowości internetowych. Rozważania rozpoczyna krótkie odwołanie się do klasycznych koncepcji wspólnoty, które koncentrują się na podzielaniu przez członków miejsca zamieszkania bądź kultury i doświadczeń historycznych. Następnie skoncentrowano uwagę na krytyce stosowania pojęcia „wspólnota” w opisach współczesnej rzeczywistości społecznej – na jej dwóch głównych nurtach, tzn. uznawaniu, że: 1. pojęcie jest zbyt szeroko stosowane i 2. pojęcie jest już „martwe”, nie mające zastosowania. Zasadność stosowania terminu wspólnota dla opisu zbiorowości wirtualnych analizujemy wykorzystując wyniki socjologicznych badań zbiorowości internautów. Badacze Internetu koncentrują się na różnych aspektach wspólnotowości, ale przeważa wśród nich pogląd o odpowiedniości określenia „wspólnota” dla ugrupowań wirtualnych. Ważnym argumentem za stosowaniem terminu „wspólnota wirtualna” jest jego zakorzenianie w języku potocznym, z którym język nauk społecznych nie powinien pozostawać w sprzeczności.
