Soil permeability is the measure of the soil’s ability to permit water to flow through soil pores. It depends chiefly on the volume and geometry of soil pores, bulk density, and soil structure. Studied soils were overgrown with short-rotation plantations of Salix and amended with sewage sludge in Germany, Estonia, and Poland. Sewage sludge application as well as the use of soils influenced water permeability.
The paper presents selected results of analyses of the properties of post-mining land of the former lignite mine „Przyjaźń Narodów” in the region of Łęknica in the Lubusz Voivodeship. The land formed in that area had very unfavourable properties: its granulometric composition (light clay sand) was susceptible to water erosion, the reaction of the formations was highly acid, the contents of total organic...
The studies on iron and aluminium forms and soil forming processes quantification in Chernozems were conducted in two localities in Western Slovakia. Two soil pits were done in a complex of arable Haplic Chernozems in Krakovany and two soil pits representing arable and forest Cambic Chernozems were done in Báb. The soils were sampled every 10 cm and analysed using standard methods. Based on analytical...
The geography, physical and physicochemical properties of the Podilski Tovtry rendzinas have been studied. The paper describes the differences in the rendzina ontogenesis caused by lithological, geomorphological, climatic conditions and human activities. The role of the lithological factor in the formation of spatial heterogeneity and the change in the Podilski Tovtry rendzina components have been...
Organic matter plays an important role in stability and fluxes of trace greenhouse gases between land surface and atmosphere. A steady decline of soil organic matter in Poland is observed, therefore the pending problem and new challenge is to increase its level, particularly in sandy soils. In the last decades a growing interest in various sources of organic matter, for example brown coal, its derivatives...
The physical and chemical parameters of soils play an important role in the binding and migration of trace elements in the environment. The study attempts to assess the correlation between the basic characteristics of colluvial and alluvial soils and the concentration of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn. This will make it possible to indicate the key factors determining the binding of metals in soils. The studied...
The aim of the work has been to compare the particle-size distribution in the soils of two catenas located in two mesoregions in the Masurian Lakeland and formed within two phases of the Vistula Glaciation. The studied catenas are located in the Olsztyn Lakeland within the Pomeranian phase (Pierwągi catena) and the Mragowo Lakeland within the Poznan phase of the Vistula Glaciation (Linowo catena)...
The aim of this study was estimation of total copper content and its fractional composition in arable soils in the Podlasie Province. It was found that total content of copper was typical for uncontaminated soils. In very light and light soils, more copper in available and potentially available fractions has been noted, by contrast in medium soils – in residual fraction which is unavailable for plants.
Humic substances (HS) constitute a large part of organic matter found in aquatic environment. The HS strongly interact with both inorganic and organic pollutants. Occurrence of the HS in groundwater accounts for many problems with treatment procedures. These natural components cause an increased intensity of water colour, affect its taste and odour, hinder removal of iron, manganese and other metals,...
This paper is a side effect of preparing international publications on our long term research on soils’ susceptibility to wind erosion. For the paper to be internationally understandable we had to translate the texture classes from the Polish soil-agricultural maps (PTG1974), used as a basis to derive ten soil units investigated in the experiments, into the widely recognised USDA classification....
In the sequence of soil composed of black earths, deluvial soils, organic soils covered with a thin layer of mineral-organic deposit and moorsh soils, soil texture, bulk density, content of organic carbon and organic matter, total porosity, total and readily available water as well as resources of organic matter and water in 0-25 cm and 0-100 cm layers of the soil profile were studied. A catenal variabilities...
The paper analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of the most commonly used groups of models of soil moisture and plant water stress based on satellite thermal imagery. We present a simple proof of linking NDTI and CWSI indicators with plants water stress and quantitative justification for the shape of the points cloud on the chart Ts-NDVI.
The paper presents the results of the study connected with determining the contents of total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), available phosphorus (PE-R), sulphate sulphur (S-SO4 2-), and the activity of acid phosphatase (AcP) and arylsulphatase (ARS) in Haplic Luvisol (LVh) fertilised with varied farmyard manure (FYM) doses (0, 20, 40, 60, 80 t ha-1) and nitrogen in the form of ammonium...
Different soil texture classification systems are used in Poland. The system most widely used in agriculture is named after Polish Soil Science Society (PSSS) and is described in the soil classification norm BN-78/9180-11 (BN1978 standard). The last edition of soil classification system and soil texture classes published by PSSS in 2008 (PSSS 2008 classification) is different from BN1978 standard...
Performing a primary analysis, such as principal component analysis (PCA) may increase accuracy and reliability of developed pedotransfer functions (PTFs). This study focuses on the usefulness of the soil penetration resistance (PR) and principal components (PCs) as new inputs along with the others to develop the PTFs for estimating the soil water retention curve (SWRC) using a multi-objective group...
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries large peatland areas of the Stołowe Mountains were drained for the forestry use. The aim of the study was to assess the real impact of the natural (climate) and anthropogenic (forestry drainage) factors on the actual nitrogen mineralization in the shallow organic soils in the Stołowe Mountains National Park (SMNP). For the needs of the study, two research...
The study consisted in assessing the impact of the cement industry on the selected physicochemical properties and total and bioavailable content of heavy metals in soils located in the vicinity of the factory. The sampling points were located in the four transects to the east, west, north and south of the plant, at an increasing distance of 0 - 250 - 500 - 1500 and 2000 m. The soil samples were collected...
This overview article presents major forms of reclamation and development of external and internal spoil tips, which are formed during brown coal mining and from bottom ash dumped near open-pit mines and power stations. In the late 1970s, a new form of agricultural and forest recultivation was developed – the PAN model. According to the concept, crops and forest-forming plant species should be introduced...
The studies involved determining the influence of Cr(III) and Cr(VI), as well as compost, zeolite and calcium oxide on the content of selected macronutrients and trace elements in soil in which oats were grown. An increase in the content of total chromium, manganese, zinc and nickel took place along with increasing contamination with Cr(III) and Cr(VI). In pots with Cr(VI), the addition of compost...
In the present work, we aimed to study the effect of quantitative changes of micronutrients (Cu, Zn, Mn) in soil and plants caused by wood ash applied into the soil in increasing doses. A pot experiment with medium textured soil, white mustard as a test plant and six amendment treatments (doses of wood ash: 0, 1, 5, 10, 20, 30 Mg·ha-1) was performed. Total contents of Cu, Zn and Mn were determined...
