The article is dedicated to the phenomenon of interlingual homonyms and paronyms in Russian and Bulgarian languages. It is based on the concept that homonyms and paronyms are rightly labelled as false friends of the translator, thus emphasizing the practical importance of this popular term. The author explains the origin of false friends of the translator and limitations of their formation in Bulgarian language. A short list of typical false friends in Bulgarian-Russian translation is also included.
