We propose a cooperative cognitive system. The primary system and the cognitive system inform each other such as synchronization in frequency, phase and time. Primary user (PU) can employ orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation and the cognitive user (CU) frequency hopping (FH). We explore the scenario in which the CU and PU share the spectrum simultaneously.
Spectrum sensing is one of the key technologies of cognitive radio. Based on noise characteristics estimation and support vector machine (SVM) technology, this paper proposed a frequency domain two-stage spectrum sensing method to improve sensing accuracy under low signal-to-noise ratio scenarios with low system complexity and high generalization ability. In the slow sensing stage, the frequency-domain...
Mobile sensor networks (MSNs) enable extensive applications of data collection, such as accident report in transportation and health prediction in public health. Incentive mechanism (IM) is applied for sensing user (SU) recruitment. However, the IM used in traditional MSN is not efficient due to limited information of SU used for recruitment. With the development of cloud computing technology, cloud-based...
This paper presents a novel spectrum sensing method for femtocells in LTE systems. In order to improve the downlink throughput and reduce sensing energy consumption of the femtocells, the method first identifies the service types (voice service or data service) of the macrocell users, and then dynamically adjusts the spectrum sensing period to optimize the throughput of the femtocells under the condition...
People spend most of their time indoors. This is why indoor air quality is one of the key factors affecting our health, activeness and quality of life. Buildings we are living in should give us comfortable and healthy conditions. Buildings equipped with HVAC-systems often operate using default settings with no automation installed causing problems in indoor air quality and building structures. In...
This paper will discuss an embedded system for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). The system designed is a working proof of concept prototype made for an SHM system using Piezoelectronic transducers as the sensors. The system uses pulse-echo and pitch-catch techniques to find the location of damage and the width of the damage. If damage is present, the system will generate an email and send to the...
The automotive industry, in accordance to transportation methods represents a significant part of the general consumer's daily life. With the limitations experienced by consumers in time and money, systems offering consumers the chance to save are becoming more and more prevalent. In this paper, an Internet of Things (IoT) system consisting of a vehicle, its On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) data, and an...
Lower back injuries are prevalent among healthcare professionals, especially nursing assistants working in skilled nursing facilities. Previous studies have shown that by using good body mechanics in pulling and lifting, one can significantly reduce the risk of lower back injuries. In this paper, we report a feasibility study on using a low-cost human motion tracking system to promote safe patient...
To keep pace with today's computer and technology-driven workforce, strategies that spark and foster student interest in computer science during the K-12 years are sorely needed. Thus it is essential that teachers at these formative years are able to provide successful learning experiences in computing. We provide an overview of the Strategic Problem-based Approach to Rouse Computer Science (SPARCS)...
