We have demonstrated a quasi-distributed sensor using an active mode-locking (AML) laser with multiple fiber Bragg grating (FBG) reflections of the same center wavelength. We found that variations in the multiple cavity segment lengths between FBGs can be measured by simply sweeping the modulation frequency, because the modulation frequency of the AML laser is proportionally affected by cavity length.
A 9.5-m continuous chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) interrogated with an optical frequency domain reflectometer is used for strain and temperature measurements. The spatial resolution is 4 mm and the noise level is 0.1 K corresponding to 1 μstrain. The strain profile is also derived from the optical reflection spectrum alone, and the results are in good agreement with the profile obtained from the...
Effect of fluorine (F) doping in the core of a birefringent photonic crystal fiber (PCF) on sensing capability of temperature and strain was investigated by using Sagnac loop interferometry. The birefringence of the F-doped PCF was measured to be 1.56χ10−4 at 1550 nm and the temperature and the strain sensitivities of the F-doped PCF were found to increase from −9.6 pm/°C/m to −34 pm/°C/m and from...
A few-mode microfiber knot resonator (FM-MKR) incorporating a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is investigated for measurement of relative humidity (RH). Two modes, such as HE11 and HE12, are excited and interfered in a nonadiabatically tapered structure of the single-mode fiber (SMF). After making a tie with the few-mode microfiber, the FM-MKR is fabricated. In the FM-MKR, two modes, such as HE11 and HE12...
We propose a high speed strain measurement method using an active mode locking (AML) fiber Bragg grating (FBG) laser sensor with a chirped FBG cavity. The mode-locked frequency of the AML laser depends on both the position and Bragg wavelength of the FBG. Thus, the mode-locked frequency of cascaded FBGs can be detected independently along the cavity length of cascaded FBGs. The strain across FBGs...
We investigate the sensitivity improvement of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors based on the optical attenuation-based weak value amplification (WVA). We successfully enhance the strain sensitivity of the FBG sensor based on the proposed WVA. The amplification factor (A) controlled by the optical attention is optimized to improve the sensitivity of the FBG sensing probe. The strain sensitivity of...
We review our recent work on chirped-pulse phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry along optical fibers and its application in the measurement of true nanostrain variations in the kHz frequency range over km-long fibers. We also show how this technique can be used to perform distributed photothermal measurements of gas presence in suitable microstructured fibers.
In this work, a fiber ring laser sensor has been employed to analyze the influence of passive Er-doped fiber acting as saturable absorber. Lasing modes of fiber ring lasers can be reduced by properly locating a saturable absorber that narrows the spectral width of the FBG that selects the lasing wavelength. Employing commercial Er-doped fiber, different configurations have been evaluated, reaching...
