This paper presents a novel optical fiber device based on a polymer suspended mirror on the end facet of an optical fiber. With an own-developed optical 3D micro-printing technology, SU-8 suspended-mirror devices (SMDs) were successfully fabricated on the top of a standard single-mode optical fiber. Optical reflection spectra of the fabricated SU-8 SMDs were measured and compared with theoretical...
We report a directional-coupler-based refractive index sensor and its cost-effective fabrication method using hydrofluoric acid droplet wet-etching and surface-tension-driven liquid flows. The proposed fiber sensor consists of a pair of twisted tapered optical fibers with low excess losses. The fiber cores in the etched microfiber region are exposed to the surrounding medium for efficient interaction...
A novel photonic crystal fiber with a Ge nanoparticles-doped germano-silicate core was fabricated by using the MCVD and stack-and-draw processes. Effect of Ge nanoparticles and the air-holes structure on non-resonant optical nonlinearity and supercontinuum generation was investigated.
In this article, an Adiabatic Tapered Optical Fiber — Fabry Perot (ATOF-FP) Sensor is introduced as a simple refractive index sensor. This FP Cavity relies upon reflection from two cleave ends of ATOF sensor's arms. Its spectrum was investigated with Distributed Feedback (DFB) tunable laser and photo detector. With analyzing the change in Optical Transmission Power (OTP) versus refractive index changes,...
We demonstrate operation of an interferometric optical gyroscope that uses an on-chip 3m ultra-low-loss silicon nitride waveguide coil. The measured minimum waveguide loss of the waveguide coil fabricated using lithographic die stitching was 0.78 dB/m. The angle random walk and bias instability of the gyroscope were characterized to be 8.52 deg/hr1/2 and 58.7 deg/hr respectively.
We propose a novel single fiber optical tweezers based on a graded-index multimode fiber (GIMMF), whose length is arbitrary (when the length is larger than 5mm). The optical fiber tweezers based on GIMMFs can propagate larger light field intensity and trap particles easily. The optical fiber tweezers based on precise length GIMMF had been achieved. In this paper, the optical fiber tweezers applies...
A spider uses up to seven different types of silk, all having specific functions, to build its web. For scientists, native silk — directly extracted from spiders — is a tough, biodegradable and biocompatible thread used mainly for tissue engineering and textile applications. Blessed with outstanding optical properties, this protein strand can also be used as an optical fibre and is, moreover, intrinsically...
