Intermediate frequency (IF) gain bandwidth (GBW) of terahertz (THz) mixers based on superconducting niobium nitride (NbN) hot electron bolometers (HEBs) has been improved. The IF GBW has been measured by 2 different methods and same values up to 7 GHz have been obtained.
We have proposed and fabricated an antenna-coupled microbolometer with a Joule-heating resistor at the center of a half-wave antenna on a Si substrate to achieve a high-performance sensing in 1 THz frequency region at a room-temperature. The heater is directly connected to a half-wave antenna at its center and the thermistor is thermally contacted to but electrically isolated from the heater by a...
A Transition Edge Sensor (TES) composite bolometer for Fourier Transform spectroscopy was developed. The design is based on a superconducting thermistor, SiN membrane technology and a thin film metal mesh absorber which is optimized for the spectral range from 0.1 THz to 3 THz. A prototype was built; its characterization and first application results are presented.
We report on a 4.7 THz heterodyne receiver being developed to fly on the Stratospheric Terahertz Observatory (STO-2) balloon platform. The receiver is based on a single pixel hot electron bolometer (HEB) mixer pumped by a 4.7 THz 3rd order distributed feedback quantum cascade laser (QCL) as local oscillator and is designed for high resolution spectroscopy of the astronomically important neutral oxygen...
Imaging polarimetry is an important tool for the study of cosmic magnetic fields. In our Galaxy, at submillimeter wavelengths polarization levels up to 10% are measured in the dust emission from molecular clouds and in the synchrotron emission from supernova remnants. We present here results from the commissioning of PolKa, a reflection-type polarimeter working in combination with the Large APEX Bolometer...
High sensitivity room temperature THz direct detectors made of YBa2Cu3O7-x nano-bridges, with a broadband optical coupling (0.1–2THz) are presented. An optical responsivity (Rv) up to 45 V/W was measured at 400 GHz. For bolometers with an electrical responsivity of 70 V/W a noise equivalent power (NEP) of 50 pW/Hz0.5 was experimental obtained.
We report on our hot electron bolometer mixer development for the focal plane array extension upGREAT of the German Receiver for Astronomy at Terahertz frequencies (GREAT) operated on SOFIA. For (up)GREAT we have pushed the waveguide technology to 4.7 THz and present RF performance results. We describe the RF planar circuit design, the micro fabrication employing NbN microbridges on 2 μm thin Si membrane...
We overview the technology of superconducting Hot-Electron Bolometer mixers in the field of terahertz heterodyne detection. HEB mixer performance is analyzed vs competing technologies and application fields, with emphasize on radio astronomy. We discuss materials which have been reported in the past to be used for such devices with both phonon-substrate and electron-diffusion cooling mechanisms. It...
