We present a comprehensive study on the influence of the metamaterial geometry on ultra-strong coupling to intersubband transitions. The spatial overlap of a metamaterial cavity mode and quantum-well region shows the strongest effect.
We show that the thermal emission of a finite-size blackbody emitter can be enhanced. We experimentally observe a four-fold enhancement of the far-field thermal emission of a carbonblack emitter having an emissivity of 0.85.
