Microwave pulse compression results from a five-fold helically corrugated waveguide are presented. In these experiments an X-band microwave pulse of duration 80 ns and a 6% frequency sweep was compressed from 5.8 kW to 128kW into a 1.6 ns pulse with a compression factor of 22 in the peak power.
The construction of the 140 GHz, 1 MW CW gyrotrons for the 10 MW ECRH system of the stellarator W7-X at IPP Greifswald is ongoing. While acceptance testing of the gyrotrons is progressing, reliable output parameters and stable production have been achieved. This report summarizes the actual status and some topical results. Focus is put on the final construction and latest parameters measured at factory-acceptance...
We report on Terahertz wireless communications and fast imaging experiments at 300 GHz, using nanometer-sized transistors as detectors. The physical mechanism of the detection is related to the overdamped plasma waves in the transistor channel.
We present a continuous-wave coherent homodyne detection system based on terahertz (THz) phase control using balanced electro-optic phase modulation for high dynamic range. Phase-sensitive and fast THz measurement is demonstrated with a dynamic range of over 55 dB in 1-ms integration time.
In this paper we explore an adaptation of a high-temperature superconducting (HTS) Josephson R-SQUID (Resistive Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) heterodyne oscillator for the detection of terahertz (THz) radiation. This approach can be potentially applied for a large array detector readout in the frequency domain. The design concepts for the R-SQUID THz detector and early measurement results...
The responsivity of a Golay cell detector for continuous-wave 2.52 THz radiation is measured under the modulation frequency from 2 to 50 Hz. Theoretical analysis of the detector output signal is performed by modeling the detection process as a response to a sequence of rectangular pulses. Calibration of the detector with different input powers is achieved by using a thermopile calorimeter as the reference...
We report on uncooled antenna-coupled thermoelements with a fast response time operating at 0.812 THz. Each sensor pixel consists of 8 thermocouples in series. As thermoelectric structure, a BiSb/Sb freestanding air-bridge is used, fabricated by micromachining. A thermal time constant as low as 22 µs and a NEP of 130 pW/Hz0.5 at 1 kHz modulation frequency is measured in air at room temperature. The...
