We have built a 2SB mixer, which has demonstrated a sideband rejection ratio as high as 15 dB over the full band of 600–720 GHz and the SSB noise temperature between 200 and 370 K. Both sideband ration and noise temperature are well within the ALMA specifications.
Data processing of Terahertz signals for reliable explosives detection via Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy is investigated. Wavelet denoising, wavelet power spectrum estimation, and wavelength selection show promising results. Experiment results for Composition B-3 and Pentolite are presented.
The electromagnetic noise generated by terahertz photoconductive emitters was investigated, and the intensity of noise spectrum was analysed by statistical method. The relationship between the noise of the emitter and the resistivity as well as carrier lifetime of the antenna material was obtained. And the effect of carrier lifetime and mobility of antennas on the THz generation efficiency was investigated.
Highly efficient mesa-structured 1.5 µm photoconductive antennas, direct detection without lock-in amplifier, and a voice-coil mirror drive with accurate position sensor are merged to a fast and precise system. A pulse trace of 25 ps is measured every 50 ms, and integration over 15 s results in a superior 75 dB dynamic range and a bandwidth of 5 THz.
The operating frequency of InP high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) based amplifiers has moved well in the submillimeter-wave frequencies over the last couple of years. Working amplifiers with usable gain in waveguide packages has been reported beyond 700 GHz. When cooled cryogenically, they have shown substantial improvement in their noise temperature. This has opened up the real possibility...
We report on uncooled antenna-coupled thermoelements with a fast response time operating at 0.812 THz. Each sensor pixel consists of 8 thermocouples in series. As thermoelectric structure, a BiSb/Sb freestanding air-bridge is used, fabricated by micromachining. A thermal time constant as low as 22 µs and a NEP of 130 pW/Hz0.5 at 1 kHz modulation frequency is measured in air at room temperature. The...
