In this paper, we present a generic solution for context based self-adaptation of production systems. We describe the overall architecture of the proposed system, as well as its components. Furthermore, we illustrate how this architecture is being used to extract the production context of machine tools and improve their energy efficiency.
This paper proposes a methodology to overcome failures on Mamdani rule based fuzzy inferences in navigation. The fuzzy inference failures are observed in three situations: Intersected contradictory decision boundaries, improper transition region between the inference boundaries of non-intersected contradictory decisions and contradictory decision accumulation. In order to solve the problems, it is...
Cognitive radios (CR) can sense and detect temporarily available spectral holes for an opportunistic operation to improve the spectral efficiency and coexistence of industrial radio systems. It will be of particular interest for a CR system to apply predictive modeling in order to forecast the behavior of the coexisting environment. A secondary cognitive user shall use preemptive tuning of its operating...
Industrial plants tends to be immersed in a distressing environment and the decision making process can be hindered by some blocking conditions. The key idea of this work is to use risk analysis to support the user in identifying the cause of a problems as well as deciding what actions should be developed to eliminate it. The risk analysis is then used to calculate the risk of a specific situation...
Modelica Modeling language is powerful and suitable for modeling mechatronic systems, being possible to interact different technological aspects and deal, simultaneously with different technologies (mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic,‥). In this paper it is discussed, in a case study, the possibility of using this language for modeling an automation system (controller and plant) in closed...
Existing models focus on specific aspects of distributed automation systems, e.g. communication aspects (IEC 61158) or application aspects (IEC 61131–3). Systems like IEC 61499 are directly dedicated to distributed applications but leave essential details of communication integration open. For the design of distributed automation systems it is necessary to understand the behavior of the complete system...
Nowadays the use of so-called Network Control Systems is a common practice. Although convenient, networks introduce several perturbations to the control system, due to the additional latency, jitter and even errors that arise when messages fail to be delivered. This paper presents a control architecture that attenuates the impact of the network on the controller performance. The proposed architecture...
The document describes an approach for monitoring automated choreographed business processes. Process choreographies are characterized by a chain of single processes. The progress state of the whole process chain and each of its components is regarded as an important information to gather. This paper depicts a general method for monitoring process choreographies. The described approach is based on...
The network management plays an important role in Wireless Sensor Networks WSNs, to control both the sleep and the wake times of the nodes to make data transmissions in an energy-efficient way, thus prolonging network lifetime. In this paper, we propose an innovative approach to control the uptime of the nodes of an Industrial WSN using a fuzzy based algorithm. In a scenario of process control is...
The paper addresses the problem of reducing the production lines downtimes through an automatic real-time fault isolation and identification system. The paper presents first a methodology, from system specification to implementation on industrial PLC's, for fault isolation based on a special timed analysis and discrete event observers, and in addition shows a real industrial application of the approach,...
Industrial Ethernet-based motor drives offer many advantages for motion applications. This paper presents the implementation and analysis of a motor drive with the EtherCAT, an open real-time Ethernet standard, for high-precision motion systems. Considering the characteristics of the multitasked software and the network interface, we analyze the delay in actuating the motor in response to a command...
Microshrinkages are known as probably the most difficult defects to avoid in high-precision foundry. This failure renders the casting invalid, with the subsequent cost increment. Modelling the foundry process as an expert knowledge cloud allows machine learning algorithms to foresee the value of a certain variable, in this case, the probability that a microshrin-kage appears within a casting. However,...
Today, RFID is used to identify a wide range of work pieces or individual products for tracking their movements through the logistics chain. For future purposes there is a strong demand to make products more intelligent by extending the limited RFID identification technology. We propose in this paper an Autonomous Product Memory. This autonomous object requests, analyzes, evaluates, and stores data...
This paper deals with the control of discrete manufacturing processes whose individual manufacturing units are able to produce components of different types that are stored in separate buffers. One of the standard control methods for such processes uses the so-called Kanban scheme, where the currently produced type is only switched when one of the buffers is about to run empty. Recently, an alternative...
Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is more popular than ever in a lot of different application domains. Initially used only at the enterprise level this approach is now spreading to the other layers down to the device level. In this context, the interoperability between the systems and the devices communicating across all domains and layers has to be particularly well defined. This interoperability...
The present article describes the development of a standard-based software infrastructure, supported by the Service Oriented Architecture paradigm, for the management of complex distributed energy systems where efficient energy production, distribution and consumption are considered. The work has been developed on the context of the NEMO&CODED project (NEMO) and focuses on NEMO's architectural...
Model Driven Engineering (MDE) is a new paradigm that has been proposed to deal with the design of current complex applications. Complexity is also the tendency within the automation domain, where integration, reuse, flexibility and optimization are, among others, requirements demanded to adapt to a rapidly changing and competitive market. MDE relies on the concept of model, as a way to represent...
Future manufacturing systems will require to process large amounts of complex data due to a rising demand on visibility and vertical integration of factory floor devices with higher level systems. Systems contained in higher layers of the business model are rapidly moving towards a Service Oriented Architecture, inducing a tendency to push Web Technologies down to the factory floor level. Evidence...
