Phosphate glasses are excellent host materials for lasers using rare-earth ion transitions. Combining highly-doped phosphate glasses and advanced fiber drawing techniques, we developed phosphate glass fiber lasers and will review recent advances in their performance.
We demonstrate wavelength conversion based on cross-phase modulation induced nonlinear polarization rotation in a carbon nanotubes-filled micro-slot fiber device. Wavelength converted signal with 3-dB power penalty for 10 Gb/s NRZ signal is obtained.
A Q-switched laser system which couples two ytterbium doped fibers is presented. Depending on the pump intensity this system yields either short or long nanosecond pulses. The gain competition accounts for the observed phenomena.
We fabricated a fiber-connector-type saturable absorber in which SWNTs and P3HT (poly-3-hexylthiophene) were coated on the connector end. The pulse width was 147 fs and the repetition rate reached as high as 51 MHz.
We experimentally investigate the interactions between solitons in multi-bound states generated from an active mode-locked fiber laser and within the ring cavity. Their phase difference and corresponding interactions between solitons are studied.
We evidenced the polarization rotation in an Yb3+ rod type fiber amplifier injected by a subnanosecond microlaser. Simple numerical simulations account for the observed phenomena.
A dissipative-soliton oscillator can replace the oscillator, stretcher, pulse-picker, and pre-amplifier in a chirped-pulse fiber amplifier. 150-ps pulses at 3-MHz repetition rate are amplified to 1-muJ energy with pulse duration as short as 670 fs.
Cavity dumping of a fiber laser is demonstrated. A microstructured fiber with an electrically driven internal electrode is used for intracavity polarization rotation with nanosecond risetime. The optical flux can be dumped within one roundtrip.
Record-short pulses of 200 fs have been obtained from a power-scalable-Yb-fiber-CPA system that uses chirped-volume-Bragg-gratings for the stretcher and compressor. The power was scaled up to 50 W with a corresponding 33 W of compressed power.
We report recent advances in the development of fibers for the delivery of both single and heavily multimode laser beams in spectral regimes spanning the visible to mid-IR.
A long ring-cavity, low repetition rate Yb-doped fiber laser was demonstrated. Pulses with repetition rate of about 381.3 kHz and single pulse energy above 300 nJ were obtained.
