In this paper, the thickness dependence of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (Ku) for series of disordered perpendicular CoPt films with 10, 14, 20, 25 and 30 at% Pt content was examined. Ku value as a function of lattice deformation and surface anisotropy was also discussed.
In this work, magnetic properties and structure of granular type tilted media of (FePt-Fe3Pt )/MgO are investigated. The reason for choosing Fe3Pt is because the ordered Fe3Pt alloy thin films are found to exhibit large magnetic anisotropy (Kl and K2 are -4x106 erg/cc and 2x107 erg/cc) at room temperature, respectively, and thus a composite grain of FePt and Fe3Pt is expected to tilt the easy axis,...
This paper presents detailed micromagnetic analysis of the magnetization reversal characteristics and recording properties and comparison with the conventional granular perpendicular media (GPM) will be discussed. The percolated perpendicular media (PPM) consists of exchange coupled magnetic grains with strong perpendicular anisotropy and, more or less uniformly and relatively densely distributed...
We have demonstrated that magnetic domains can be imaged by X-ray holography. We present images of magnetic domain patterns in various systems containing thin film magnetic multilayers with perpendicular anisotropy. The magnetic reversal of a [Co(1.2 nm)/Pt(0.8 nm)]x50 multilayer was imaged in an applied magnetic field with 50 nm spatial resolution.
In this work, it has been found that the ordering temperature of L10 FePt thin film with perpendicular anisotropy can be reduced to below 300 degC with the Cr/Pt/FePt trilayer structure. The interfacial microstructures were also examined to determine their correlation with the deposition temperature of FePt layer.
FePt:C composite films with large magnetocrystalline anisotropy are in-situ fabricated in this study by sputter deposition. The microstructure and magnetic properties of the films are investigated using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and polar magneto-optical Kerr analysis. Well-defined grain boundaries and relatively uniform grain with mean diameter of 5.6 nm are obtained by...
In this paper, the magnetic properties of thin SmCo5 film has been studied. A thin sandwich structure, Ru/Cu/Ru, is proposed as a new structure of the underlayer for SmCo5 films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The first Ru layer is deposited to improve the Cu(111) orientation, and the second Ru layer is to restrict the interlayer diffusion between Cu and SmCo5. The Sm-Co films as thin as 10...
SmCo5 is a potential material for ultra high density magnetic recording media due to its high magnetocrystalline anisotropy of about 108 erg/cc. Although it cannot be considered for media applications due to its poor corrosion resistantance, a recent study by Asahi et al. reported that the corrosion resistance can be improved substantially by the addition of Cu. Furthermore, the SmCo5 film on the...
Continuous thin film magnetic media have long been used in the data storage industry but densities above 1 Tbit/in2 may not be possible due to onset of the superparamagnetic limit. Patterned media have been suggested as a possible means to exceed this limit, and it has been shown that irregularities in the shape and size of magnetic islands due to imperfections in the patterning process introduce...
Perpendicular magnetic recording will dominate over the storage technology in the near future. However, a high areal density will be achieved only with introducing additional technologies to perpendicular recording. Among the candidates, patterned media would be the most promising because it is highly consistent with conventional magnetic recording. Design and recording properties were studied for...
A systematic study of parallel and perpendicular exchange bias as well as magnetic anisotropy in [FePt/FeMn]10 multilayers is performed. The dependence of exchange bias (HE) and the unidirectional anisotropy constant (JK) on the thickness of FePt layer is investigated. The dependence of blocking temperature (TB) and exchange bias on the FeMn thickness is also investigated.
In the present study, the values of Ms, Ku2 and the first order uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy term, Kul, to utilize the Ku2 effect on the thermal stability whilst simultaneously achieving a good writability. The resulting ratio of DeltaE to Hs is discussed and compared to media without a Ku2 term.
In the present study, the switching field distribution (SFD) of the Tb/Pt/Ru/CoPtCr-SiO2 perpendicular media has been studied in relation to the Ar pressure at which the recording layer was deposited. The goal of the present study is to correlate the SFDs of the Tb/Pt/Ru/CoPtCr-SiO2 media with their intergranular exchange coupling and their grain size distribution.
In this paper, the MRAM design utilizes material intrinsic perpendicular anisotropy is analyzed via micromagnetic simulation with inclusion of spin momentum transfer effects.
In the present study we show two variations of the bottom-up approach. First our correlated structural and magnetic properties studies on epitaxial FePd films grown on (001) MgO will show that this particular system does exhibit perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and it is also nano-structured due to 3-dimensional growth mode on the chosen substrate. We also note here that the highly-ordered nanostructures...
In this paper, effects of MgO intermediate layer on the structure and magnetic properties of FePt film were investigated. The metal-oxide interface on the growth of initial layer in FePt layer was also discussed. Magnetic measurements show that the out-of-plane M-H loops display perpendicular anisotropy and coercivity, Hc of about 3.3 kOe even when MgO is 1 nm thick, deposited at 50degC.
This paper reports the use of phase sensitive X-ray optical elements in the soft X-ray transmission microscope beamline to image the magnetic domain structure of Gd25Fe75 amorphous layer at high spatial resolution. The amorphous magnetic material is deposited by electron beam evaporation onto a polyimid substrate exhibiting a pronounced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Observations show a magnetic...
In this study, Nd2Fe14B thin films with perpendicular anisotropy at the thickness as thin as 5 nm have been successfully prepared. The suitability of the films as perpendicular magnetic recording media has been discussed. The films were characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) with maximum applied field 24 kOe, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chemical...
