110 Gbit/s optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission is demonstrated over 80 km ITU-T G.652 singlemode fibre (SMF) without dispersion compensation. The optical OFDM signal is generated by a novel electro-optic subcarrier multiplexing technique that combines a two-carrier modulation scheme with an optical multi-carrier light source.
8 times 11.5 Gbit/s (10 Gbit/s after coding) optical OFDM transmission over 1000 km standard single mode fibre (SSMF) with conventional distributed feedback (DFB) lasers and direct-detection is demonstrated. Compared with coherent-detection using external cavity lasers (ECL), DFB lasers and direct-detection can significantly reduce the system complexity and cost.
