We demonstrate erbium-doped waveguide lasers with lithographically-defined silicon nitride distributed Bragg reflectors. We measure output powers of up to 5 mW and show emission over a wide wavelength range (1536, 1561 and 1596 nm).
We report on the recent contrast enhancement of Astra-Gemini laser. It is shown that the stretcher gratings contribute significantly to the contrast pedestal. Implementing higher-quality gratings resulted in a significant contrast improvement. We have also investigated and quantified the contribution to the contrast pedestal from each individual grating in the stretcher.
We report a novel microring single mode laser that operates based on engineering radiation quality factors of its resonant modes using a second order grating. A theoretical description, fabrication details and measurement results are presented.
Laser beam diffraction on a patterned surface is investigated theoretically and experimentally as a powerful tool to measure thermal expansion in various materials. By tracking the deviation of high-order diffraction modes from surface-patterned polymers and glasses, expansion coefficients as small as 10−8 can be measured for temperature rises of only tens of degrees Celsius. Results are presented...
A method to characterize the linewidth enhancement factor or α-parameter of erbium doped fiber from measurements of the sensitivity to backreflection of DFB fiber lasers with a range of known resonator strengths is presented.
Blue GaN-based surface-emitting lasers incorporating a sub-wavelength high contrast grating were reported. The laser characteristics such as threshold energy, degree of polarization and divergence angle were measured to be 0.56 mJ/cm2, 73% and 12°.
