We review our recent experimental progress regarding optical metamaterials and transformation optics. The emphasis lies on three-dimensional architectures including invisibility cloaks and potential applications such as broadband circular polarizers and metamaterial metal-based bolometers.
A novel structure of optical to THz signal converter consisting of a plasmon waveguide at THz range is proposed and analyzed. High conversion rate between optical and THz signals was estimated. It can be integrated with optical waveguide and THz RTD oscillator.
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel optical modulator based on a photonic crystal resonator vertically coupled to large mode area bus waveguide.
The birefringent property of LiNbO3 (LN) is used for producing nonlinear optical and electrooptical waveguides with adhesive-free bonding (AFB) technology. Cerenkov type second-harmonic generation (CSHG) has been observed.
On-off optical switching based on the Bloch-surface-wave enhanced Goos-Hanchen effect is demonstrated for the first time by changing the medium in a flowcell that serves as the cladding of a truncated one-dimensional photonic crystal.
This paper reports on the fabrication and optical properties of a novel type of photonic crystal structure. The structure consists of an array of Si micro-rods with a very high aspect ratio (1∶25) on a Si substrate. The fabrication is based on the creation of macroporous Si by a wet-chemical etching technique. Subsequent filling of the pores and selective etching of the Si substrate creates a needle...
We propose an all-optical modulation format converter in which 4-channels NRZ-OOK signals can be converted to RZ-16QAM. The converter consists of two SOA-MZI based OOK to 4ASK converters and a single SOA for offset compensation.
The optical properties of gold stripe waveguides enhanced with a liquid-crystal overlayer are theoretically investigated. Extensive tunability of modal effective index, area and losses can be achieved via the electro-optic control of the nematic molecules.
Novel tomography was developed to observe both tomographic imaging and tomographic spectroscopic simultaneously. This method can obtain the electric field spectra of each slice in sample with optical parameters, as complex refractive index, refractivity, transmittance,…
Laser induced optical force within a micro liquid channel has been demonstrated by mode conversion between different refractive index boundaries. We modulated input laser power and refractive indexes and measured optical power.
Cold-cavity spectral characteristics are used to extract the size dependent optical loss for small diameter oxide-confined VCSELs. For aperture diameters ≤ 2 µm, the oxide scattering loss can be as large as 10 cm−1.
