Modeling results for lateral-longitudinal mode discrimination in longitudinally inhomogeneous finite-length waveguides of ridge lasers are presented, obtained by numerical solutions of the wave equation and calculations of the mode thresholds, predicting high-brightness single-mode output of wide stripes.
Adiabatically flared slab-coupled optical waveguide lasers (SCOWLs) at 1.06 µm wavelength have been studied, achieving a large fundamental mode and a 32% increase in COD power. Capabilities and limitations of the taper mechanism are discussed.
