To find out heavy metal pollution in and ecological risks of the sediments in Daliaohe Estuary, 19 surface sediment samples were collected from Daliaohe Estuary and analyzed for contents of Cu, Pb, Zn and Cr. The Indices of Geo-accumulation and Mean Sediment Quality Guideline Quotient were employed to evaluate the pollution status and ecological risks. Similar results were obtained through these two...
An extensive survey was conducted in surface sediments of Dongjiang River, Guangdong. This article adopted the method, index of geo-accumulation, to estimate the quality status of these metals. The results showed that Dongjiang was polluted by the some metal inorganic substances. The results of Principal Component Analysis ( PCA) showed that the heavy metals in the sediments of Dongjiang River came...
Water and sediment samples, collected from Meiliang Bay in Taihu Lake, were employed to investigate the dynamic of phosphorus in water-sediment interface during the courses of proliferating, blooming and decaying of C. Reinhardtii under simulated conditions. Particulate phosphorus released from the decayed algae and sediment increased the availability of phosphorus to algae during the incubation....
A bacterium was screened from the sediment of the southern Yellow Sea, which could degrade PCBs as the sole carbon source and was named strain Q. The identification and degradation characteristics of strain Q were studied. The effect and influencing factors of application of strain Q to remedy PCBs-contaminated soil through simulated experiments were also studied in lab. The results showed that the...
The present study examined the recent environmental history of the Poyang Lake, located in the middle Yangtze River region, central China. High sedimentation rates, revealed by 210Pb measurement in different periods of the lake, ranged from 0.035 to 1.08cm/year. The results indicate that the change of sedimentation rate is correlative to the intensity of human activities. In addition, pressures from...
The reflectance of red and near infrared bands has proved to be sensitive to water depth. This paper takes four sections in Jiangsu Coastal Zone as a typical study area. Different models for retrieval of water depth have been evolved based on analysis of the ETM image and field measurements of the research area. Then, water depth was computed by depth retrieval model and the accuracy of predicted...
14 kinds of PCBs were determinded in water and sediment of Qin Huai River in Nanjing, P.R.China. The results showed that: the concentration range of ΣPCBs in the water of the river was 19.56∼843.22 ng/L, their mean content was 170.19 ng/L; the concentration range of PCBs in the sediment was 125.80∼1714.84 ng/g, and their mean content was 718.45 ng/g. Compared with the rest of the world river, PCBs...
Degradation behavior and the effects of nitrate and sulfate of perchlorate (ClO4−) in soils and sediments of natural environments were investigated. The lag time of both ClO4− and NO3− degradation was site-specific and depended on the environmental conditions such as content of organic substrate, nitrate concentration, initial ClO4− concentration and prior ClO4− exposure. The lag time of ClO4− degradation...
The pollution of Jiaozhou Bay was investigated by measuring the trace elements of surface sediments. Sediment samples were collected at 33 locations in Jiaozhou Bay in November 2003. The large-scale distribution pattern of metals in surface sediments showed elevated levels of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Hg compared with values obtained in 1989. Concentrations of soil-related elements such as Al, Fe, Mn did not...
Northern Section in Jiangsu Province of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal (from Yangzhou City to Weishan lake) is an important part of water transfer from south to north project (east route) because the water quality will impact the quality of transportation water. In recent years, many local governments have been paying more attention to control the water quality discharged into this river from different...
In order to select and establish an appropriate method for extracting and purifying the microbial total DNA from a meadow soil, seven extraction methods (five direct methods, one indirect method and one commercial kit method) and two purification methods were examined, with the quantity and quality of extracted and purified total DNA compared. The results showed that all the seven methods could extract...
The sediment core DS of Higher-up Lake has been determined by using the method of 137Cs & 241Am dating. Both results were unanimous. Results showed that two peaks of 16 cm and 14 cm were observed in 1963 and 1974, respectively. Sedimentation rates of the core were 0.34 cm a−1 and 0.39 cm a−1, respectively. The results obtained from the combine of the two methods were reliable.
Gradient descent (GD) method is used to fit the the laser grain-size distribution of the sediments with a sum of four weighted lognormal functions. The numerical results indicate that the GD method is not only easy to operate but also could effectively optimize the parameters of the fitting function with the error decreasing steadily. Meanwhile the overall fitting results are satisfactory. As a new...
Spatial distribution of metal concentrations in the surface sediment samples collected from 19 marine at Guanhe estuary in Haizhou Bay, Lianyungang was studied. Heavy metal (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cr, As, Ni, Mn) concentrations were determined and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) was calculated to understand the pollution status of the study area based on the background values. The ranges of the measured concentrations...
There are many accumulation channel islands in Ma-wu-tong Section of Yangtze River, and the area of channel islands change rapidly. We choose eight channel islands and study their changes on TM(Thematic Map) which date are 1979s, 1990s, 2001s, 2006s and 2009s. We determined the spectrum of typical objects in channel islands by ISI921VF-256T Field Spectroradiometer, combined the right bands, and interpreted...
Based on the analysis of 210Pb radioactivity of the cores collected from intertidal wetlands of Luoyang River and Jinjiang River in 2008, this paper analyzed the vertical distribution and change characters of 210Pbex, and discussed the variation and infection factors of deposition rates and sedimentation flux. The results showed that both of the cores were affected to a certain extent, such as bioturbation,...
Suspended sediment of Case II waters is the important research issues in Yangtze estuary. The data of SeaWiFS (Sea-Viewing Wide Field-of-View Sensor), installed on SeaStar, has been used to obtain SSC (suspended sediment concentration) of more complex and turbid coastal waters in Yangtze estuary. Then the author of this paper selected remote sensing parameters Xs1 and established the quantitative...
Effect of nutrient concentration of overlying water on nitrogen and phosphor release from sediment in Lake Baiyangdian was studied in this paper. The results indicated that nutrient levels of overlying water impacted the release rate significantly. The average release rates were negatively correlated to the nutrient levels of overlying water. The release curves of absolute amount for total nitrogen...
The boron-enriched wastewaters generated by the Yangbajing geothermal power plant in Tibet were drained directly into the Zangbo River that flows across Yangbajing. The boron concentrations of all water samples collected from the study area were determined using Inductive Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS), and the total boron and water-soluble boron in all riverbed sediment samples were extracted...
The surrounding area of the Bohai Bay has one of the highest economic development rates of China. Rapid industrialization and urbanization has resulted in extensive changes in land use, including the construction of harbors and embankments. For the analysis of the changes of the coastlines, multi-temporal Landsat images have been used, in combination with topographical and nautical data. From the...
