A novel optical buffer memory with a shift register function is proposed. 10 Gbit/s optical buffering has been successfully demonstrated using 980 nm VCSELs. We have also demonstrated polarization bistability and all-optical flip-flop operation in 1.55 mum VCSELs.
Dynamic all-optical flip-flop operation is observed for a single distributed feedback laser diode using the spatial hole burning effect. Bistabilities with extinction ratios of up to 35 dB are obtained. For the flip-flop operation, we demonstrate repetition rates up to 1.25 GHz using pulses of 0.5 pJ.
A photonic crystal- and quantum dot-based all-optical flip-flop switch (PC-FF) capable of synchronizing with high frequency clock was fabricated for a future optical digital signal processing device with high-speed capability of 40 Gb/s and beyond. Nanostructures constructing the PC-FF exhibit excellent characteristics and suggest successful optical FF demonstration.
A compact optical memory with single SOA is demonstrated by exploiting two coupled fiber ring lasers. Without necessity of feedback, the memory shows bi-stability over a large wavelength range. Dynamic flip-flop operation is also investigated.
We report an experimental demonstration of prototype all-optical flip-flop operation of a conventional cylindrical shaped 1.55-mum wavelength single-mode vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) based on polarization-switching under external laser beam injection. Two injection beams with orthogonal polarizations were used to control the output beam pattern of the slave VCSEL. The polarized beam...
