Metamaterial or left-handed lines are synthesized by adding a series capacitance and a shunt inductance as loading elements to the host transmission lines. In this paper, we present analysis and design of a left-handed metamaterial line which is loaded with an extra shunt capacitor. Traditional metamaterial lines exhibit an inherent high-pass backward-wave response in their lowest harmonics. The additional...
UWB communication systems demand for ultra-wideband filters of bandwidth of up to 110%, which is challenging to achieve for a compact and low-cost design with conventional materials. This paper presents a novel ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass filter design using composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH TL) structure. In addition, to further simplify the design and reduce the size, metal-insulator-metal...
A novel microwave sensor based on rectangular waveguide filled with a double negative (DNG) material is modelled using a full wave electromagnetic commercial simulator CST. Simulating results show that evanescent mode are amplified and transmitted through the structured DNG materials within the frequency band that exhibits negative permittivity and permeability. Evanescent mode is sensitive to permittivity...
Rigorous analysis on the propagation characteristics of electromagnetic waves in a metamaterial cloak is presented. Fresnel's equation of wave normals is successfully derived from Maxwell's equation by studying the characteristics of a monochromatic plane wave propagated in a metamaterial cloak.
In this paper, two kind of microwave absorbers based on local resonance of artificial periodic structures i.e. metamaterials. When irradiated by plane wave with adaptive polarization, there will be electric or magnetic local resonance in the metamaterials. To absorb the microwave energy been reflected, resistive sheets are used like conventional Salisbury screen. The absorber based on electric resonance...
Electromagnetic wave propagation and scattering by the left- and right-handed material cylinder is investigated by incident wave. The schematic geometry of double-layered cylinders alternatively constitutive of left- and right-handed materials is also proposed. Furthermore, the distribution of the electric fields inside and outside the cylinder is calculated by numerical methods. Bizarre EM scattering...
This paper presents a spiral antenna backed by a mushroom-shaped EBG reflector. The antenna characteristics are investigated on the basis of the electric and magnetic fields obtained by using the finite-difference time-domain method. The investigation reveals that removing some patches from the EBG reflector improves the axial ratio.
The explicit formulas of the electromagnetic field produced by a vertical electric dipole in a negative-index medium coating a non-perfect conductor slab is derived. The contribution of three kinds of wave number to the total field is discussed and investigated. The wave-number of the surface wave is between the wave-number in the air and that in the negative-index media. Because the contribution...
We present free-space microwave measurements on composite metamaterials (CMMs) consisting of split ring resonators (SRRs) and wires on alternating boards, also known as left-handed material (LHM). Our experiments are based on a type of CMMs with unique configurations and the transmission measurements performed in free space exhibit a pass band extending from 10.5 to 13.5 GH. The widely belief of the...
