Micro-grid systems are based on distributed energy resources (DERs) for example wind, solar etc., energy storage devices and scattered loads that can perform islanded as well as grid-connected operation. The concept of micro-grid has brought a paradigm shift from large scale centralized power generation to Distributed Generation (DG). It has reduced the dependence on main electricity grid and enables the consumer to become a part of electricity supply system. However, such energy system requires advance power management and control algorithms to operate efficiently especially during islanded mode. Power electronic converters have to be re-designed to connect micro-grids with main grid due for better power quality and power sharing. This manuscript provides an overview of control strategies to solve power quality issues in micro-grids and enable reliable, efficient and safe operation.
