This short report deals with the application of linear machinery in public rail-guided transport. After summarizing advantages and disadvantages of linear motors, several examples of application of linear synchronous/induction motors in railways, including maglev applications[1], are briefly described. Furthermore, the author explains recent efforts for international standardization of linear induction traction technology as well as for energy-saving automatic train operation at Japanese linear metros.
