With rapid advancement in telecommunication sub-domains like Internet of Things (IoT), Internet of Energy (IoE), Internet of Vehicles (IoV), Next Generation Networks (5G) and Big Data, the strength, intensity and effectiveness of intruders is also evolving. Intruders are ready to challenge modern advancement in the domain of electronic warfare. The traditional TCP/IP protocol stack does not have the capability to defend against modern threats posed by intruders, therefore, major revision, from security point of view, is mandatory. In this paper a brief overview of intruders is provided with respect to each layer of TCP/IP protocol stack. Advancements in Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) for detection of intruders are provided in chronological order. In an unending war between parallel advancements in technologies and evolutions of intruders, an intrusion detection system is always needed that works at each layer of TCP/IP protocol stack and covers entire spectrum of threats.
