A load management strategy was developed and implemented on closed and semi-closed loop mine surface cooling systems. Load reduction tests were conducted during the Eskom evening peak period to verify the strategy. The underground temperatures and relative humidity (RH) were monitored during this period. An Energy Management System (EnMS) was utilised to implement the developed strategy. The underground temperature of 110 level at Mine A varied between 23°C Wet-Bulb (WB) and 27°C WB after implementation. Underground Bulk Air Coolers (BACs) inlet air temperature on 84 level was monitored at Mine B, and the WB temperature varies between 17°C WB and 21°C. These temperature ranges are within the mines' operational limit. An average evening load reduction of 3 MW was achieved at Mine A, with annual cost savings of R1.5 million. The load reduction for Mine B was an average of 2 MW and R900 000 cost savings.
