Quantization issues have fundamental bearings on regulation and transient behavior of digitally controlled DC-DC converters. Further, the inherent nonlinearities of quantization may lead to nonlinear oscillations. Usually, the methods to address these oscillations are either resource-intensive, or employ techniques which degrade transient and/or steady-state performance. In this work, we evaluate the limitations of the two widely-used ADC quantization schemes with respect to these aspects, and propose a new dynamic type of quantization, which mitigates the problem of nonlinear oscillations while maintaining or even improving the regulator performance. The results of the proposed scheme are compared against the prior art and are experimentally validated.
