The detection and monitoring of human vital signs through remote sensing is a challenging problem. It has applications in medicine, security and in search and rescue. Consequently, there is a growing market for devices and sensors that allow remote monitoring of human health parameters. Many methodologies have been proposed for this purpose, such as radar monitoring, video camera based recording and laser based detection. Among them, impulse radar or ultra-wideband (UWB) based techniques offer several advantages due to its penetration capabilities, low complexity and high accuracy. This article attempts to provide a glimpse into the ever-expanding world of UWB systems used for healthcare.
