In this study, the authors propose a new approach for the synthesis of wideband symmetrical six-port junctions. The suggested approach is based on a novel microstrip topology that can be optimised using genetic algorithm. The proposed approach has been numerically validated through the synthesis of single and double cell six-port junctions. As an experimental validation single and double cell six-port junctions with centre frequencies of 2.5 and 5.3 GHz, respectively, have been realised and measured. The obtained experimental results have revealed the performance of the proposed synthesis approach, its robustness and its superiority compared to the conventional empirical design techniques.
