Systematic theoretical analysis on performance of various types of notch filters is presented from a control point of view. It focuses on practical implementation of notch filters in a broad frequency range. The transfer function formulation for diverse types of 2nd order notch filters and double notch filters is conducted for performance analysis. The role of the quality factor Q on the cutoff bandwidth, edge sharpness, system stability and sensitivity is also examined. Bode plots are then introduced to evaluate stability margins of the gain and phase. It provides a theoretical basis to design electrical and optical notch filters.
