This paper presents two-notch antenna consisting of I-shaped ground plane and microstrip feeding lines excited out of phase. Its radiation pattern is omni- or bi-directional in E plane by changing the antenna geometry. Antenna pattern control of this notch antenna is discussed in this paper based on the geometry optimization by characteristic modes analysis. Three symmetrical modes are excited by the center feeding for two-notch antenna and each resonance frequency is determined by the length of feeding microstrip line or ground plane shape. This paper presents the method to excite bi-directional pattern.
