This contribution shows a methodology to identify and process solution patterns from existing mechatronic systems and to provide meaningful reuse during the design of new systems. The method is based on Model Based Systems Engineering and uses a matrix-based modularization approach to identify solution knowledge in existing systems. Tacit knowledge becomes externalized and functional chains are depicted in a domain-spanning way. The result is a methodical supported pattern mining process for the overall systems design.
