A frequency shifted reference ultrawideband (FSR-UWB) scheme has been proposed for low data rate applications to reduce the receiver complexity of the traditional transmitted-reference UWB (TR-UWB) scheme. However, the FSR-UWB is rather energy inefficient since one bit information is delivered by two pulses in a frame. In this paper, we propose an enhanced FSR-UWB scheme which can send the multiple bits in the two orthogonal pulses shifted by different frequencies in a frame. The results from analysis and simulation show that the proposed scheme provides an SNR gain of 1.5 dB over the conventional FSR scheme at the same data rate.
