We describe a secondary surveillance phased array radar (SSPAR) concept that is capable of 1 second update rates and in other ways meets or exceeds capabilities of current rotating secondary surveillance radars. The proposed SSPAR would consist of a modest number of channels, each consisting of a transmitter, a receiver, and an antenna that is omnidirectional in azimuth. Adaptive array processing techniques are required for operation in the presence of the multiple transponder signals that the omni antennas will receive.
