This paper discusses a black-start field test performed with new strategy. The new strategy makes full use of the long time operation capability of pumped storage units in ultra-low load conditions and takes advantage of the double-bar configuration of most electrical stations, with black-start units only supplying the auxiliary load of itself and that of target units, enables a complete separation of restoration path from distribution and the other transmission networks, avoiding any disturbance to customers during restoration field test. This feature improves the reliability of restoration plans, makes field test process repeatable and predictable. Field test of Shandong power grid in China verified the feasibility of this new strategy and the possibility of applying it in other areas which use pumped storage units as cranking power.
