There are still rare competency studies which regard small team leaders as the research object so far, and this study can make up for the gap to some extent. By doing investigation to 140 people through our questionnaires A, B and C, we attempted to build the competency model for small team leaders. After the analysis of the reliability and validity, 31 competences were left to compose the model. Aiming to seperate too many competences involved in “individual qualities”, we did several exploratory factor analysis of this dimension and compared the two-factor, three-factor and four-factor model. Considering the naming degree and the cumulative percent of variance of each model, two-factor model was chosen and was also decided to be improved by doing another exploratory factor analysis to its first dimension to improve the practicability. The final competency model consisted of five dimensions concerning “task management modes”, “team management modes”, “traits of charater”, “knowledge level”, and “accumulated social resources” having wide application prospect in ability test, selecting, training and performance management of small team leaders.
