In this paper, a current source converter (CSC) based high-power high-speed (HPHS) permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive is designed. An important feature of this CSC-HPHS drive is that the switching frequency is limited below 420 Hz with the stator frequency up to 200 Hz on motor side. The whole operating range is separated into three regions, namely the high speed region, the medium speed region, and the low speed region. Different modulation schemes and control schemes are chosen in different operating regions for good harmonic performance. The corresponding criterions of designing the filter, the modulation and the control within different operating regions are given. Both simulation and experiments are used to verify this design.
