This paper presents a segmented PI controller for an 84-pulse voltage source converter (VSC), subjected to several common disturbances in voltage and load levels. The corresponding voltage total harmonic distortion (THD) is compatible with special applications' requirements which include hospitals and airports (IEEE Std 519-1992), while the quantity of employed switches is reduced in comparison to conventional arrays. Conventional PI controllers exhibit good performance around nominal conditions when used on FACTS devices, but they do not tolerate severe disturbances. Thus, a segmented PI strategy based on the error and its variation is utilized and selected according to crisp fuzzy rules. Simulations and experimental results obtained from a scaled prototype are provided to show the control performance.
