Safety, in automation industrial systems, is a new subdomain, but is receiving attention rapidly. To achieve high production efficiency and to curtail downtime in such systems, there must be appropriate intelligent mechanism in them at the architectural level. This paper presents an intelligent controller architecture that relies on the adjustable speed induction motor drives for safety systems in the automatic industry. The proposed intelligent controller architecture can greatly curtail downtime through its unique functions when detects unsafe conditions, as it reduces the speed of axes to an acceptable safe value, instead of removing the power. The proposed architecture adjusts the tradeoff between safety and efficiency and exhibits the ability to deal with a variety of abnormal signals effectively. The applicability of proposed architecture is demonstrated with a case study.
