Recently, a reticular model based on classical Chinese meridian systems was proposed to explain the mechanism of acupuncture. In this paper, the rationale behind this model is thoroughly discussed. Basically, it is based on the theory of embryogenesis, physiological experiments, and effects of acupuncture. It is believed that the cable theory of reticular meridian networks, not the neuron doctrine, can readily account for the simultaneous synchronization of brain rhythms, pain relief, and recovery of disorders in physiological functions.
